The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation was founded in 1990 by David Clarke. The aim has always been to support the elderly, adults living with disabilities and long-term illness and those who are socially isolated through a variety of wellbeing activities (Relaxation, Mindfulness, Tai Chi, Pilates, Yoga, craft groups, book club, singing and more). We also offer outdoor education in our dedicated Yew Trail, woodland area and Discovery Den, and support services groups (Young Onset Dementia, Fibromyalgia, Lipoedema, MS, Pulmonary Fibrosis). There are three charity shops, a model railway and buggy rides between the two sites, a community allotment, a tearoom and plenty of walks for visitors to enjoy the beautiful Charnwood countryside.
The focus and drive of the charity has remained pivotal to the wellbeing of the local community in Leicestershire and further afield offering a wide range of support groups, classes and educational activities covering the full spectrum of ages and needs.
We have over 130 volunteers in our "family" who are the lifeblood of the Foundation. The sense of belonging, feeling useful and valued, and developing skills and knowledge are key elements to the success of our volunteer team. Volunteering benefits their own mental health. Our volunteers have supported the Foundation by giving over 20,000 hours of their time over the last year in a variety of areas (Model Railway, Charity Shops, Buggy Drivers, Maintenance crew, tearoom and hospitality).
The Foundation is an inclusive non-profit organisation committed to providing a welcoming, home from home environment for many years to come.
The Foundation stays true to its core values of staying humble and understanding the value in simple things. We continue to work hard to protect the legacy left by David by providing a safe, inclusive, home from home environment and we never turn anyone away.
Foundation Ethos
- Looking forward - through the activities and services we provide, we give many people something to look forward to which can be an incredibly positive influence on their lives. Looking forward is also key to the educational services we deliver, which help to equip and prepare young people for the future.
- Doing something different - we provide variety throughout everything we do, introducing our visitors to stimulating activities and enabling them to develop new life skills through education and participation.
- Freedom to belong - we are inclusive and make it easy for people to find a sense of belonging through an open community where they will find a common bond with others. This also opens doors to new activities, helpful services, friendships and opportunities to learn.
- At home, away from home - we provide a change of environment and different surroundings that are designed to inspire and energise our visitors but in which they feel immediately at home and entirely comfortable
