The Society of St James is a Southampton based registered charity which provides housing, care and support services to people who are homeless or vulnerable.
At SSJ, we believe that every individual has a right to a home. We believe that individuals should be given the opportunity to develop skills that enable them to lead a fulfilling life.
Over the last 36 years SSJ has grown considerably, and made substantial improvements to the service it provides including the building of a purpose designed hostel. In addition to its accommodation and support services, the Society has also begun to develop a number of exciting education, training and employment initiatives. These are designed to help both the Society's residents and other marginalised groups improve their opportunities and quality of life and help them contribute to the wider community.
Today, the society runs a number of housing projects including a 20 bed hostel along with shared move-on houses and independent-living flats. The Society focuses on developing long-term solutions for those on the streets as well as offering short-term emergency accommodation and sustenance.
The majority of the people who use these services are not just homeless. Many have other issues in their lives that have inhibited their ability to live independently. Some have mental health conditions, learning disabilities or have a history of substance misuse. Over 30% are young people likely to have come from severely deprived backgrounds and a large number lack basic life skills.
Each year, the Society of St James helps over 500 people to get off the streets and to lead fuller, more independent lives, with up to 175 benefiting from the Society's accommodation services at any one time.
