By taking part in the Parkinson's Disease Society's Unity Lottery you will be helping us to be there for people affected by Parkinson's. The PDS was founded in 1969 by Mali Jenkins, a carer whose sister had Parkinson's. The Society exists to provide information and support to people living with Parkinson's, their friends, families and carers.
The PDS is the UK's only organisation dedicated to helping people with Parkinson's. The Society now has more than 29,000 members, 40,000 supporters and more than 330 local branches and support groups. These branches and support groups are run by volunteers, often people with Parkinson's and their families, and offer support, information, social activities and practical help at a local level.
" After my diagnosis had been confirmed, I was advised to find out if there was a local Parkinson's Disease Society branch in my area. There was, and I started to go to meetings. These have been a great help as they've given me the opportunity to meet others living with the condition and to share ideas. You certainly don't have to face Parkinson's alone" - John Geipel (70) (Branch Member)
Parkinson's is a progressive and fluctuating neurological condition, which occurs when cells are lost from the part of the brain that controls movement. There is currently no known cure for Parkinson's, but there are a range of treatments available to help control the symptoms and maintain the quality of life of people living with the condition. Over the last three years, the PDS has invested over £5 million on promoting and funding research into the cause, cure and prevention of Parkinson's, and improving available treatments.
Currently, there are around 120,000 people living with Parkinson's in the UK and about 10,000 people are newly diagnosed each year. In order to lend support to people at this crucial time we have produced a free DVD, Being There. Each DVD costs £2 to send out, so by playing the Unity Lottery with just two numbers a week, you can have a positive impact on the life of someone who has just been diagnosed with Parkinson's.
