Hook Norton Football Club
Hook Norton, Oxfordshire
SPORT ITALIA HELLENIC FOOTBALL LEAGUE
(PREMIER DIVISION)
HISTORY
The club was founded in 1900 as a works team for the Brymbo Ironstone Company. It played in purely local leagues until the early 1980s, occasionally winning the odd trophy here and there, but it was generally pretty much at or near the bottom of the heap throughout this period.
Keith Willis took over the manager`s role in the early 1980s and transformed attitudes, as a result of which the club shot through the four divisions of the Banbury and District League to achieve the Premier Division title on four occasions.
Promotion followed into the Oxford Senior League for season 1997/8, and again into the Premier Division of that League which it won in the two following seasons. This success meant a move upwards for season 2001/2 into regional football as members of the Hellenic League. The Division 1 West championship was achieved at the first attempt (by a margin of 9 points), and more promotion followed into the Premier division of the Hellenic League, in which the club played for the following two seasons.
With the advance of the club up the football pyramid, it became essential to obtain planning permission for floodlights and other facilities at Hook Norton in order to comply with the National Ground Grading Criteria laid down by the Football Association. This battle started in 2001 and was long and hard fought.
The absence of these facilities meant that the club was compulsorily relegated back down to Division 1 West at the end of season 2003/4.
Finally in June 2005, planning permission was finally obtained. On top of this season 2006/7 produced the playing form to achieve promotion back to the Premier Division – a target that we had set ourselves immediately following our compulsory demotion.
For many years, there were no junior football teams, but there are now 8 from under 16s downwards, and they are all thriving. The Club attained Charter status last year, and its aim to achieve a football pyramid within its own organisation is well on the way to fruition.
