About your Good Cause
The Universal Beneficient Society (UBS) was founded 150 years ago by a group of philanthropists; one of whom included the novelist Charles Dickens.
The organisation was set up "to financially assist all those in need with no distinction of race or creed", and today this ethos remains the same. However, today we concentrate our efforts on providing support for people over 65 and in severe financial difficulty in the UK.
Today, UBS provides assistance to vulnerable older people with particular focus on those living in inner-cities. Our aim is to help alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that comes from living on such a low income, barely being able to provide for their most basic needs. This, often compounded with ill health and limited mobility, can lead to life being considerably more difficult. Subsequently, when a beneficiary is taken into the UBS family we offer lifelong friendship and financial support. We aim to help people maintain their independence, dignity and peace of mind. We provide one off yearly emergency grants, slippers and bedding as well as welcome gifts and a Christmas hamper each year to all our beneficiaries, which can be for some the only gift they receive.
